The Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh established the concept of Engaged Buddhism. The essence of this is to integrate the ancient Buddhist teachings into modern day living in the western world. Thay (as he is known) created a monastics centre, Plum Village in France, that opens its doors to anyone who would like to go. The teachings are available through books and videos that he has created, and retreats that his followers leads all over the world. Thay teaching promotes the importance of groups of students meeting to support each other in practising this way of living.
